We would like a student to work on optimising this unit by adjusting feed flows, concentrations and operational parameters and drawing conclusions on the best operating conditions. The results of this internship will help the research group immensely as a well performing lab-scale RO unit can be used in various research projects.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, independent and hands-on student. • GO-Fresh II + (CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS - In many parts ofCLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS - In many parts of the South Western Delta, external freshwater supply is scarce. Freshwater availability in the root zone of these areas is dependent on excessive rainfall and groundwater availability. The areas are vulnerable in dry periods which will unfortunately only increase in the future. Pro-active measures are necessary in order to guarantee freshwater availability in these areas in dry periods. The aim of these measures is to store (excess) freshwater (in periods with heavy rainfall) in the soil, so that it can be used when needed, in dry periods. In the research project GO-FRESH I, three pilot experiments were carried out in different locations to increase the local freshwater availability. The experiments will be continued in GO-fresh II. The aim will be to investigate how the three experiments can be an example for broader use, so that the techniques may be interesting to other farmers as well. Things that should be incorporated are the business plans of the farmers, wishes of the farmers considering the available ‘fresh-making’ techniques and other opportunities of the techniques. In other words; social and economic factors / opportunities should be investigated. The results should be implemented in an interactive WIKI.
The reserach types included in the project are; interviews and computer research.ect are; interviews and computer research.)
 • Investigating Flocculation Agents for Dow BV + (CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS - The Dow fresh waCLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS - The Dow fresh water WWTP is suffering from poorly settling sludge, thereby limiting the plant's hydraulic treatment capacity. As the effluent quality is critical for reuse as cooling tower make-up, currently no chemical additives are applied to improve settling behavior of the activated sludge.
The objective of this study is to identify suitable coagulant/flocculation agents, which both improve settling properties and do not have a detrimental impact on the effluent quality. Lab testing using actual activated sludge and wastewater (by means of a jar-tester) is a key component of the task. Moreover the student is challenged to generate an effective cause-effect monitoring plan, comprising the characterization of incoming wastewater (by means of chemical or physical testing), determining activated sludge settling properties, and the suitability of coagulating/flocculating agents.

This assignment is suitable for graduation level. • Robust Water System - Next Steps + (CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS - The Province of CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS - The Province of Zeeland and HZ University of Applied Sciences, were two of many stakeholders that worked together in the past years on the topic of the Robust Water System in Zeeland, specifically Zeeuws Vlaanderen. Next year, the Province of Zeeland would like to continue with this project, with a focus on the future and how robust our local water system really is. For this project, the following steps have been highlighted:

We need to sketch an outline of the future of our Robust Water System to determine how future-proof it really is. This requires:
- The map of the region should be updated as if all described project possibilities have already been executed (therefore all project details need to be strengthened.
- In parallel, the criteria for robustness are set so that we can test the “future“ map against these criteria.
- Lastly, determine which gaps still exist in relation to our ambitions and jointly define what is still required (and by when) to complete the desired picture

This project is suitable for native Dutch students only. • TKI- Valorisation Wastewater Streams + (CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS - Water purificatiCLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS - Water purification of wastewater streams in the food industry and horticulture (and down stream processing) ask continuously for new (technological) solutions. These solutions are not only about the prevention of waste (realization of 0-emission), but are also about the production of valuable resources from wastewater. The intention of the TKI program ‘Valorisatie Reststromen’ is to develop products and applications with technology suppliers on one side and end-users on the other side. The main question to that is: How can residues selectively be removed from wastewater and which value can be given to these retained resources and the cleaned water?
Partners in this project include; Coroos, Lamb Weston Meijer, Evides, VAM Watertech and HZ.
