Design Thinking & Doing

Students in the Design Thinking & Doing track will engage and design relevant solutions for a variety of challenges within the region of Zeeland. Complex and impactful themes such as Water, Energy, Food and Vitality are central within this Design Thinking minor.

Throughout the projects students will not only make a difference for the client with their fresh insights and perspectives but they will also learn to apply the Design Thinking approach with help of our Design Thinking toolkit. The Design Thinking toolkit is divided into four main phases based on the Double Diamond model as you can see below:

Process & Procedure

Next to the four main phases of the toolkit, the diamond also has clear sub-steps in each main phase providing a systematic approach to tackle the complex challenges they are facing in their project. All sub-steps come with one or multiple templates we designed to help students think outside the box and make sure they really understand the problem at hand and their stakeholders. Through hands-on experience and constant iteration within this process, students develop the confidence and tools to approach complex challenges that may arise in their future careers. Moreover, students will learn to..

🔹 Collaborate with industry stakeholders and fellow students from different study programs, backgrounds and universities.

🔹 Work on one or two projects simultaneously, depending on their study load

🔹 Develop solutions through exploring, ideating, prototyping, testing, and iterating

🔹 Embrace uncertainty—sometimes you won’t know the outcome right away, but you’ll learn to trust the process

🔹 Build a versatile skillset that applies across multiple disciplines and industries

Flexible ECTS and entry

Within this minor it is possible to join projects throughout the semester and register for other ECTS options than the regular 30 ECTS. A full 30 ECTS semester involves working on two projects simultaneously, offering an intensive and comprehensive experience. Those opting for a smaller credit package can focus on one project, allowing for greater flexibility to combine with other commitments.

Opportunities for minor repair possibilities:

  • 6 ECTS
  • 10.5 ECTS
  • 15 ECTS

Different combinations of these packages are available. For example: when students are in need of 7 ECTS it is possible to choose the package of 10,5 or for those requiring 21 ECTS it is possible to combine 15 ECTS + 6 ECTS.

This can be beneficial for those who need to recover missed credits from a previous minor or other courses. Participants or 'repair' students can join ongoing projects and work towards fulfilling their credit requirements in consultation with their study program. The Garage facilitates these opportunities, but final approval for credit recovery must come from the relevant study program representatives.

Coaching & Collaboration

Experienced coaches offer guidance and support, ensuring that the project teams have the necessary tools and insights to navigate their projects successfully. With weekly update meetings progress, key learnings and next steps are discussed. The Garage encourages active engagement and collaboration to foster teamwork and knowledge-sharing.
