- Reuse: Reuse local water: Plastic Whale collects more than 40.000 PET bottles per year. PET plastic is both versatile and valuable. The bottles they collect are turned into flakes and fibers which are made into recycled PET felt used in furniture. Vepa builds Plastic Whale Circular Furniture and high-quality office furniture. Besides using recycled PET bottles, the company also makes optimal use of other waste streams at their factory. Nothing goes to waste. At the end of a product’s life, parts are reused and recycled to give it another lease of life.
Summary of the project
Plastic soup is a growing global problem. In 2020 another 8 billion kilos of plastic waste will enter the world’s rivers, lakes, and oceans, creating a hazard to sea life and humans. Plastic waste is a growing and worldwide problem. Part of the problem is that people perceive plastic as a valueless disposable product; use it once and then chuck it away.
Plastic Whale wants to tackle this problem by showing people that plastic is not waste, but a valuable raw material. Plastic Whale is the first professional plastic fishing company in the world. A social enterprise with a mission: make the world’s waters plastic-free and create value from plastic waste. It started five years ago with a single challenge to build a boat made of plastic waste. Tourists, business people, and children are fishing plastic out of the canals of Amsterdam. Nowadays Plastic Whale is organizing plastic fishing events, school programs, and public events. Thousands of people, businesses, tourists, and kids' roll-up their sleeves and take to the Amsterdam canals to come plastic fishing with Plastic Whale. They all want to make the world a better, cleaner place and support our mission for plastic-free waters. Plastic Whale is having a fleet of six design boats made from Amsterdam Canal Plastic. Their goal is to go ‘out of business’: overfishing would be a positive phenomenon.
Cross-border
Building on the success in Amsterdam, the Plastic Whale Foundation aims to have a wider positive impact through local partnerships. They began working with a first local partner in the developing world. Sweep smart is a sustainable waste management enterprise based in Bangalore, India that collects and recycles plastic waste to create local jobs with decent pay & conditions, and reduce the amount of plastic on landfill sites, one of our planet’s main sources of plastic soup.
