Transitions in deltas: from large-scale control to sustainable movement

Many fertile and ecologically valuable river and delta areas are under pressure due to urbanization and climate change. Sea level rise, more precipitation, increased river discharge, subsidence and drought are serious threats to safety, freshwater supplies and biodiversity. The challenge is to reduce the vulnerability of river deltas and at the same time to increase the opportunities for healthy economic and ecological development. These developments are seen as transitions; continuous, complex changes and adjustments that professionals require that can effectively intervene in river delta systems. Versatile delta professionals work together for innovative, multidisciplinary and integrated solutions. As facilitators of change, they share the required knowledge and insights into the latest developments in river delta systems (coast, sea and river) and make a meaningful contribution to the transitions of these systems.
