Stabilization of the floor

Most of our customers’ homes are very unlevelled, and therefore require us to use a significant amount of soil from outside of the home to “backfill” the house before we lay and compact our laterite layer, and then our sand/clay layer. The backfill can be very unstable and cause cracks and dents in the floor as a result. The laterite therefore also becomes unstable as it sits on top of the backfill. There are several known stabilizers for earth, including lime, cement, potato starch, and various enzyme products (earthzyme, permazyne, etc.). This research will entail researching and experimenting with various natural and affordable materials that will improve the stability of both (or either) our backfill or our laterite layer.
