While offering protection, they also form unique opportunities for nature and civilization. Due to climate change a heavy increase in the volume of sand suppletions is visible. The living labs are focused on two large scale projects focusing on coastal protection (the sandmotor and Hondsbossche Duinen). Sadly these structures have decreased or even disappeared over time. Bringing them back would be an improvement for coastal defense (it decreases the erosion in an area), natural value (birds, crabs and other wildlife are often found in these areas with a high food availability) and economy (mussel farmers could use a portion of the plots for cultivating and selling mussels). The project Perkpolder was developed to fill in this gap of knowledge and get more experience on this topic. This is achieved through a series of experiments on levee stability and effectiveness of flood emergency countermeasures in the Hedwige-Prosper polder, a unique cross-country test site of 6 Km2 on the boarder of Belgium and the Netherlands. Insights acquired in the field will be incorporated in international guidelines for practitioners and in educational curricula. To make this process more efficient the project 'Low cost monitoring with high tech innovations' looks into the opportunities for new technologies to help make monitoring faster and\/or more accurate. This is done by testing various new techniques in the field and comparing them to the traditional monitoring protocols."],["Rammegors Tidal Restoration<\/a>","7 december 2015","31 december 2024","In order to protect the Netherlands from the impacts of climate change, the Dutch government placed a variety of dikes, dams and barriers to the low-lying Southwestern delta. This has led to quite some changes within Eastern Scheldt. A strong decrease in intertidal areas is one of the consequences of the addition of hard structures into the Eastern Scheldt. This is mainly due to an imbalance between the excisting morphology and tempered tides, also called a 'sand deficit problem'. One way to prevent further loss is opening up the lake to tidal influence again. This will not only form an opportunity for nature to restore itself, but it also gives opportunities to install tidal powerplants in order to generate more green power. \nHowever, opening up the lake will also set other changes and processes in motion. One of the aspects is erosion of the lake banks.
