At the HZ Green Office, we create impactful projects that inspire sustainability within our university and the surrounding community! With a combination of research, student engagement, and collaborative initiatives, we are creating a greener, more connected environment. Below, you can find an overview of some of our special projects and events that you can get involved in.
Our Projects
PLONS: Plastic Research in the Scheldt Region
PLONS is a two-year research initiative focused on tackling microplastic pollution in tributaries of the River Scheldt. In collaboration with the Scheldemond Fund, our students and researchers work together to analyse the extent of microplastic contamination and develop strategies for cleaner water-systems.
Scheldt Youth Parliament (Erasmus+)
In partnership with Good Planet Belgium, this two-year project connects young people from the Netherlands, Belgium, and France to discuss the legal rights of the River Scheldt. Participants engage in cross-border dialogues on key environmental issues, such as pollution and ecological preservation, to drive positive change in the region.
Scheldt Walk - Drinkable Rivers
As part of our commitment to raising awareness about clean water, we are organizing a walk along the Scheldt from source to mouth in April-May 2025. This event culminates in a gathering at the statue of Michiel de Ruyter in Vlissingen, celebrating our shared commitment to sustainable water management.
Community Engagement Initiatives
MDT Buitenkans: Nature and Personal Development
MDT Buitenkans offers students a unique opportunity to step outside their routine and connect with nature. This three-year program includes a three-day nature immersion experience followed by a social project aimed at enhancing ecological awareness and community engagement. Through hands-on activities, students develop skills in leadership, resilience, and teamwork.
Boer & Buur met Natuur
In collaboration with local farmers and partners like Plantalia, this project focuses on sustainable agriculture and food innovation. By incorporating locally sourced organic produce into HZ’s catering services, we are working towards a healthier, more sustainable food system. This initiative also provides students with the opportunity to explore food production and sustainability.
Campus Art and Sustainability
Our “Student Art in Public Spaces” project transforms the HZ into a space where creativity meets sustainability. Students collaborate with local artists to create artworks using biobased materials, creating a deeper understanding of sustainable practices. This project is an excellent opportunity for students to express their creativity while contributing to the beautification of our campus.
Ongoing Activities
Weekly Clean-Up Actions
Every Friday, we organise clean-up events across Zeeland’s beaches and waterways. These efforts are part of the Schone Schelde initiative, aiming to reduce plastic waste and preserve our local environment. It’s a great way to get outside, engage in hands-on sustainability efforts, and earn HZ Personality points.
WET Fridays: We Explore Together
We host hands-on activities focused on sustainability, ranging from urban greening to water management. These sessions, held in the JRCZ building, allow students to collaborate on real-world projects while exploring solutions to environmental challenges.
Urban Green Spaces
In partnership with the City of Vlissingen and local stakeholders, we are transforming the Kenniswerf (surrounding the HZ Vlissingen campus) area into a vibrant green hub. You can also join us in developing the APV Student Garden, where students and community members come together to grow food and enhance urban biodiversity.

Campus Art Unveiling - December 2024
Sustainable artworks created by HZ students in collaboration with local artists. This event will celebrate the creativity and commitment of our community toward sustainability and environmental awareness.
Scheldt Walk Kickoff - April 2025
The Scheldt Walk event is a journey dedicated to promoting clean water initiatives. This event is a great way to connect with others who share a passion for sustainability. If you want to join, please let us know!
