Below you can find an overview of some of the events we are organising, together with our stakeholders. The Green Office is very active and dynamic: we sometimes forget to post our events here. To be always up to date, follow us on Instagram!

Every Thursday morning from 9-12h we organise a student garden session at APV Student Housing at Vlissingen. Join us for a nice outdoor experience and connect with other students!

2022-10-21	Clothes Swap	Upcoming Friday afternoon, just before Autumn break, a clothes swap is organised (HZ Middelburg, room GW218, 12-16h). The event is collaboratively organised by students from both International Business and Global Project and Change Management. During the swap, the film Citarum River will be shown. Citarum is world's most polluted river, due to the emissions of the textile companies that are producing "our clothes": clothes being sold here in the Netherlands by brands we all know. In addition to swapping clothes, you can also repair or refurbish clothes. A collection point where you can donate clothes has been set up at both HZ Vlissingen and Middelburg, downstairs. It would be great if you go through your wardrobe and donate clothes you don't longer need. All leftovers will be donated to Kledingbank Zeeland. Also much appreciated if you share this post amongst students and colleagues!

2022-07-22	Night of the Refugee walk	We walked 20km together with GPCM through much more green than we anticipated - several parks by water in the north of Rotterdam. We may have been around 350 walkers for the occasion. Also, the half way point was a farm/pettingzoo where we got distracted by baby goats. Climate March This was everything the previous walk wasn't: loud, crowded and short (which our feet were very grateful for).

2022-07-20	Canal Clean-up	This Wednesday, July 20, the HZ Green Office in cooperation with Doe Mee Verlos de Zee and the Province of Zeeland will organize a cleanup action along the canal. The day after mowing will take place. Organizing such a clean-up action before mowing is a first and prevents plastic and tin from being shredded into small pieces. The idea was born during the annual conference of the Clean Scheldt Collaborative last June 27. Wednesday we start at 10h simultaneously on the Middelburg side of the Canal as the Vlissingen side (at the Keersluis). Anyone can join. We provide something to drink and refreshments, but bring a water bottle because of the heat.

2022-05-19	Fossil Rebellion	->Thursday, 19 May: A big, fun, artsy and for everyone accessible(Il) central action in Rotterdam which will take place during the afternoon. Mobilise everyone. Food and Community Program after the action. -> Friday, 20 May: Decentral organised disruptive actions in Rotterdam. Community Program will be present. Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 May: Community program in Rotterdam. We rest, we party, we regenerate and we learn. Also, during the weekend, the Solidarity Program will take place (limited spots; this includes a campsite). -> Monday, 23 May: Decentral organised (disruptive) actions through the whole of the Netherlands. Also on this day, we want to show the link between fossil fuels and larger systems p oppression and exploitation. Less Community Program in Rotterdam. ->Tuesday, 24 May: One last, central action in Rotterdam for everyone who still wants to be disruptive. Central 'informal' debrief with check-ins and after care In Rotterdam during the day. The last night will be a nice party night to end the week in proper fashion. 2021-07-01	Job Offer Campaignteam Schoon Zeeland	This summer (July - August) we are looking for 4 enthusiastic young people for our Schoon Zeeland campaign team. You go out in pairs and inform everyone on the beaches of Vlissingen about the importance of clean beaches. In addition to informing, you hand out paper waste bags and you can, for example, do a beach activity with children that has to do with waste. You keep track of how many people you have spoken, and you make a small report of this every day. You work 4 days a week, 5 hours a day. Compensation is around 10 euros per hour. 2021-05-10	♻️Recycling Heroes Initiative ♻️	The recycling heroes initiative involves recruiting waste ambassadors that oversee proper waste management practices and promote proper recycling techniques at the HZ University of Vlissingen and Middelburg. As a waste ambassador, you will partake in monitoring and promotional sessions. Monitoring Sessions (Data collection) The monitoring session is observatory research. We will be assessing if the waste that is placed in the Organic, Plastic, Waste and General bin is placed correctly. We will be recording this data in a shared excel document. Promotional Sessions The promotional session incorporates handing out a recycling guide and other promotional materials to students and staff members on campus. We will be alternating between waste bins, so that we can cover all territory. 🕚When? From 10th to 12th of May. Pick up materials from 10:00 until 15:00 from Jan. He will be near the fountain in the Bellamypark, Vlissingen. Walk wherever you want in Vlissingen and collect trash! You can find some dirty areas neas the shopping areas. You can choose your own route, your own time and your own pace. 3. 2021-04-28	Bee Hotel Workshop	Make a wild bee hotel!🐝 Now, you may be thinking: "Why would I want to build a hotel for wild bees in my garden? They will come into my home and sting me!" However, this couldn't be farther from the truth. What are wild bees? Wild bees are solitary bees that live without a queen or group. They do not sting, do not enter houses and they mostly stay in the garden. As long as you don't hurt the bee, the bee won't hurt you. Why is this important? Solitary bees are important for the pollination of our plants and our food stock. In the last decades, the bee population has declined significantly, but people mostly only helped the honey bees. However, honey bees are not as good in pollination as solitary bees. A bee hotel will also help the bio-diversity in our environment! How to make a bee hotel? Why make a bee hotel yourself when you can just buy one from Action, for example? 2021-04-22	SDG Purpose Lecture Sustainable Energy	The HZ alumni and Engineering Interface Manager Jos Hendrikse is going to be talking about sustainable energy and his work at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management on the 22/04/2021 at 15:45 to 17:30h. Jos Hendrikse graduated from the Delta Management study at the HZ University of Applied Sciences in 2016. Since then he has been working on various projects in the field of renewable energy. From electricity-powered trucks to building offshore wind energy platforms. Jos has many inspiring stories to tell about the sustainable developments in engineering and how companies and institutions are trying to operate in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. 2021-04-09	Cleanup, Plastic Workshop, and Monitoring Session	The fact that plastics are useful is uncontested – it is proven by the fact that plastics are everywhere! Unfortunately, a lot of it is created for one time use, which is only a problem because plastic is not very bio-degradable – like, at all. Or is it? Most of us simply don’t know… …which is why we have organized this workshop for you on the 9th of April. It will combine a clean-up and a monitoring session with a lecture on plastics by Lorenzo Somai (a graduating Aqua EcoTechnology student)! 2021-03-30	Minor Circular Economy	The Circular Economy (minor team) is looking into greening the schoolyard and its surroundings. For the circular economy project, a lot of hands-on work and effort is needed. The minor team consists of three individuals. They would greatly appreciate your help! They will make sure that there is enough food and drinks for everyone to keep up the energy! These are the dates they are working on: • Tuesday 30 March: removing ivy in one of the green corridors. Time 10:00 to 16:00. • Wednesday 31 March: placing wood snippers in one of the green corridors. Time 10:00 to 16:00. • Thursday 1 April: placing wood snippers in one of the green corridors. 2021-03-26	Middelburg Clean-up	The HZ Green Office invites you to the cleanup on Middelburg on the 26/03/2021. The meeting point is at room GW 102 in HZ Middelburg. The cleanup begins from 10:00 to 17:00h. Feel free to stop by within this time frame and select the time that is most convenient for you. You can pick up the materials at room GW 102 and then go to anywhere in Middelburg to cleanup. Feel free to walk wherever you want and collect trash. You can plan your own route at your own time and at your own pace. Free coffee is able at Het Koffiepand. This is thanks to Anne van Helteren. Please remember to return the materials and trash to HZ Middelburg. You can earn DOUBLE HZ personality credits for this event. Corona Measures that are applied: gloves will be provided on location, bring your own hand sanitizer, and keep your distance of 2 meters.

2021-03-14	Climate March 2021	Before the Climate Alarm starts, we will start drawing circles with chalk on the ground of the Market Square in Middelburg to mark where each person has to stand (to make it Corona-proof!). If you want to spend some time away from the screen, outside and give yourself some play time, JOIN US! On 14/03/2021 at 14:00h, people will take the streets to demand more climate action at the Middelburg Market Square. Before the Climate Alarm starts, we will start drawing circles with chalk on the ground of the Market Square in Middelburg to mark where each person has to stand to make it Corona-proof! This takes place at 11:00h. This action is carried out locally and is nationally supported by various organizations including FNV, Woonbond, Greenpeace, Ofxam, Milieudefensie, Fridays for Future and XR. A local coalition of organizations and citizens that support climate-just policy is also being set up in Middelburg.

Together we are working on a plan to develop the area into a place where it is nice to stay, travel, wait or meet each other. Your input is therefore needed to meet the wishes of the student. 2021-03-12	Make signs for the Climate Alarm!	On Friday, the 12th of March, at 20h. we will make signs together via Zoom (Zoom link will follow soon). The Climate Alarm is on Sunday, March 24, in Middelburg/online. All over the Netherlands people will take to the streets to protest for more climate action. To get everyone prepared and in the mood we are organising an online sign making night. Join us for inspiration, information and a little bit of competitiveness. The best sign will get a prize!

Currently, we're cleaning up De Binnenhaven Vlissingen every other week, as part of a research HZ Green Office is doing for the municipality; the info about what type of waste we find and how much feeds into a national benchmark. This information is used to set policies to prevent waste from the source. Also, on a regular basis we organise beach cleanups or plogging events. On Saturdaymorning 19 September we are organising a cleaning & monitoring on 5 locations during the national cleanup day that is organised all around the Netherlands. 2019-11-29	Centree VisPluis Collection day	If you walk along the coast you have probably seen blue plastic threads scattered on the beaches. This plastic threads are called “Vispluis” and if you pay attention you will see them all over the coastline of Zeeland. The cultural foundation Centree from Zierikzee wants to raise awareness about the VisPluis problem. Together with the artist Kainoosh Gerami, they will create an art piece from this VisPluis. They want you to join as they organise VisPluis collection events on 10 more different locations along the North Sea coast. To support this great initiative, we organise an additional collection day in Vlissingen on the 29th November. We will meet in front of Panta Rhei at the Nollestrand at 13:00 o’clock.

You'll be joining a group of 20 to 25 roetveegpieten, together with Ingrid de Vries (coordinator HZ Green Office) and friends, giving “pepernoten” to the kids in Middelburg. Really fun to do! We’ll arrive on boats and come to the shore in the harbour of Middelburg facing thousands of children. We’ll be provided with special clothes to dress up and we'll get some black sweeps that the Pieten have from sliding through the chimney. Middelburg has wisely decided to also have 50% roetveegpieten this year in addition to 50% zwarte pieten. Next year, Sinterklaas will be helped by 100% roetveegpieten. On this occasion, we will continue the clean-up efforts while further collecting data about the plastic litter found. Christoph will be there again needing your help and guiding you through the process. However, there will be an opportunity to download this on location. This approach is oriented on the same methodology as we tested last time but with a different input approach. About the HZ Green Office For the past 2 years, the HZ Green Office has organised different events and projects around sustainability in and around the university. The HZ Green Office is run by a core team of students and a coordinator. The HZ GO! focuses on greening the campus and (near) environment by organizing and participating in sustainability projects and activities, preferably in cooperation with other stakeholders. As such, we build and maintain a diverse partnership network of local businesses, government and sponsors. Where possible, synergetic connections are initiated between external partners and HZ research & education. Ideally, the HZ-campus is a living lab and playground where students can design and pilot their own solutions in multidisciplinary teams. Our goal is to build and strengthen our (international) community, connecting with each other around action-based sustainability initiatives that generate a positive impact and inspire others. Finally, the time has come for the opening of our physical office! So join us on Thursday 10 October during the Dutch national day for sustainability. The office is located at the end of the PE2-Hallway. The opening will take place at 12:00. 2019-10-04	Beach cleanup Vlissingen	On Friday afternoon on the 4th of October, the HZ Green Office is organising a beach cleanup in Vlissingen. The meetup spot will be in front of the Panta Rhei at 14:15. We will combine our efforts to get the beach a little cleaner followed by some drinks and snacks afterwards. Drinks and snacks will be provided by us. However, please bring your own cup or a reusable bottle if you can. We will also start combining the cleanups with monitoring the things we collect. Delta management student Christoph Sonneck will guide us this Friday in monitoring plastic waste. The goal is to measure what we find, how much, and where. There are a lot of small plastic pellets on the beach at the moment, so bring a kitchen sieve/strainer if you have one. 2019-09-27	Global climate strike in Den Haag	Join the CYS interest group to support youth demanding climate action! We'll join them for the global climate strike activities in The Hague. Let's meet in the ISS lobby with our signs and other marching gear. We'll depart at 1230pm sharp to walk to Koekamp near Centraal station, where we'll join the hundreds of young people participating in the climate strike, starting at 1pm.
