=== Citizen science on Marine Litter ===
=== The Voice of the Scheldt ===
==== Combining Research and Action! ====
'''Our dedication to the clean-ups and Covenant Clean Scheldt has let this project bloom into something much bigger in the last year. We are now not only active on the front lines doing clean-ups, we are also talking to municipalities and different companies on what we can do for the Scheldt behind the scenes. Sparked by a previous lecturer of water management (Liliane Geerling) who organised a summit on the Rights of the Scheldt, our passion to keep the discussion on the rights for nature alive ignited... Especially given that we are also involved with the Scheldt Youth Parliament - a group of youth from France, The Netherlands and Belgium that come into action for the Scheldt by amongst other things, talking to decision makers.'''
'''Since 2018 HZ Green Office is organizing clean-up events at the beaches, canals, forests, and harbors in Vlissingen, in collaboration with the Municipality of Vlissingen and “Doe Mee, Verlos de Zee!”. Integrated monitoring is carried out of the marine litter distribution on the coasts of the Eastern and Western Scheldt, as well as in the harbour of Vlisssingen. This research is shared with our partners in the''' {{Cite|resource=Resource Hyperlink 01058|name=Convenant Schone Schelde|dialog=process-linkwebsite-dialog}}'''; a collaborate effort signed by 30 local parties to keep our river Scheldt clean. In this way, we participate in scientific research and at the same time contribute to efforts to keep our local beaches and River Scheldt clean.'''

In 2019, we monitored marine litter on five beach locations in Zeeland and tested different monitoring methods. The outcome of this research can be found in this report: {{Cite|resource=Bestand:Report project 2546-USING CITIZEN SCIENCE IN MONITORING PLASTIC DEBRIS ON BEACHES.pdf|name=Using citizen science in monitoring plastic debris on beaches|dialog=process-file-dialog}}.
'''But all of this will come together and manifest itself during the Scheldt Hike by the Foundation Drinkable Rivers - a hike from the source (in France) to the delta (Vlissingen) which aims to activate local communities for the water quality of the Scheldt and connect downstream and upstream communities to each other. The goal is of course to be so many that we together can be heard by decision makers, while we are giving our river Scheldt a voice! Can you hear it?'''

Over the period June - October 2020, we monitored which types and amounts of marine waste we found in the Inner Harbour of Vlissingen. ==== Rights for the Scheldt  ====
The Scheldt is one of the most polluted rivers in Europe, thanks to lots of industry at its side, not least of which includes the harbour of Antwerp. And since it seems that these industry developments have no sense of slowing down in the foreseeable future, a petition was launched to give the river Scheldt legal rights. The goal is to put water quality on the priority list of policy makers for current and future spacial planning projects. Sign the petition here: <nowiki>https://petities.nl/petitions/erken-de-rechten-van-de-oosterschelde-en-de-westerschelde?locale=nl</nowiki>

Read the {{Cite|resource=Resource Hyperlink 00652|name=story|dialog=process-linkwebsite-dialog}} that Janine Vink, wrote as a student journalism at Utrecht University, about one of our monitoring events.
However, the core team wants to take this one step further! They want someone in all local authorities to be able to represent the Scheldt, so that when regional, local or national decisions are made, the Scheldt can have a voice to defend itself, if the decision would lead to a destruction in its ecosystem, for instance.

==== Drinkable Scheldt Hike ====
Clean-ups and monitoring sessions are taking place every week. We give you the opportunity to earn HZ Personality Credits while connecting with students from other study programs, participating in an outdoor activity, and making a step towards a clean and circular economy. You don’t need to bring anything.  Earn double hours only for clean-ups with monitoring, like the ''harbor clean-ups''. To always be up to date about the weekly clean-ups, visit the [https://www.instagram.com/hzgreenoffice/?hl=en HZ Green Office Instagram][[Bestand:Whw.png|links|kaderloos|200x200px|koppeling=https://projectenportfolio.nl/wiki/index.php/Bestand:Whw.png]]
Drinkable Rivers is a foundation that has a similar goal to the Rights for the Scheldt petition but a completely different approach. The concept is to walk along a river from source to delta, and talk to locals about what the river means to them, and encourage them to beome active in improving water quality of their river.
* '''Interested?''' Just let us know upfront via Instagram or by sending an email to flec0001@hz.nl or greenoffice@hz.nl.
* '''Non-student volunteers''' are welcome to join our efforts because the initiative is based on volunteers! Contact us or your local municipality.
* You can also do '''your own cleanup'''. Locations where lots of waste can be found are around the canal between Middelburg and Vlissingen, De Buitenhaven in Vlissingen, around HZ Middelburg in the park, and around supermarkets. Or select a location in your neighborhood!

If you link this to HZ Personality, make some pictures as proof of your activity. But before that, do not forget to talk with your study coach and have the ''PDP approved''. For having the hours signed, contact Carmel Michaeli at mich0023@hz.nl
Well, the Scheldt is up next in April/May of 2025. We will start at the source on the 21st of April and arrive in Vlissingen, the delta, on the 23rd of May. There is a segment when the Green Office will join, we have two excursions lined up with the Scheldt Youth Parliament and both Ingrid and Jan will be walking the route between Antwerp and Vlissingen. See <nowiki>https://drinkablerivers.org/what-we-do/river-walks/scheldt-walk-2025/</nowiki> for the full "tour dates" and sign up links.

The Voice of the Scheldt

Our dedication to the clean-ups and Covenant Clean Scheldt has let this project bloom into something much bigger in the last year. Rights for the Scheldt

The Scheldt is one of the most polluted rivers in Europe, thanks to lots of industry at its side, not least of which includes the harbour of Antwerp.
