The Biobased Building research group focuses on the collection, development, valorization, and dissemination of knowledge about application of bio-based materials in construction and civil engineering. The research group (part of Avans Hogeschool and HZ University of Applied Sciences) also joined the FACET project as project partner from 1 January 2021.

The research group will demonstrate the viability of circular economy tourist accommodation by co-creating a demo Bio-Circular accommodation with stakeholders in a pilot in the FACET project. A couple of years ago, the building was designed by HZ students and later also constructive researched on sustainability. Students will remain involved now the building will be realized. The focus in this pilot is to look both at techniques using waste material as well as working with parts that could be used in new accommodation or been giving another “afterlife”. They will work with tourist entrepreneurs and other stakeholders (like architects, contractors etc.) to Co-create the Circular design proposal. In this way they demonstrate the possibility of a circular economy tourist accommodation and will also function as a test for tourist entrepreneurs who want to invest in circular economy accommodation but still have concerns. By involving them in the design they can test features and technics that they plan to apply and receive feedback from users. Besides that, the Bio-Circular accommodation will be a ‘home’ for circular economy innovation by sustaining communities.
