|Profiletext=Emeritus Prof. Dr. Aad Smaal is lector Aquaculture in Delta Areas. Zijn onderzoek is gericht op de rol van schelpdieren in het ecosysteem en de vele functies die zij vervullen. Het gaat hierbij niet alleen over kweken en oogsten, maar ook over de rol in het water- en natuurbeheer. Daarnaast wordt gekeken naar  oesters als biobouwers voor de kustverdediging. Na zijn studie Biologie aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam kwam Aad in dienst bij TNO in Delft. In 1980 stapte hij over naar de afdeling milieu van de Deltadienst van Rijkswaterstaat in Middelburg. Bij het Rijks Instituut voor Kust en Zee is hij onder andere hoofd van de onderafdeling Biologie geweest. In 1997 heeft hij zijn proefschrift verdedigd aan de Rijks Universiteit Groningen en trad hij aan als hoofd van de afdeling Aquacultuur van het RIVO in Yerseke. In 2007 werd hij benoemd tot buitengewoon hoogleraar duurzame schelpdiercultuur aan de Wageningen Universiteit. Tot 2017 is hij werkzaam geweest als senior onderzoeker bij Wageningen Marine Research in Yerseke. Naast zijn werkzaamheden als onderzoeker, is Aad lid geweest van de board of directors van de European Aquaculture Society en ontving hij ontving in 2017 de honored life member award van de National Shellfish Association van de USA. Daarnaast is hij lid geweest van de Raad van Advies van de Delta Academy van de Hogeschool Zeeland en is hij op dit moment nog steeds vice voorzitter van de Zilte Academie Zeeland.
