Programma Asset Management
What is that actually: asset management? Isn't that just maintenance? And the same as management of assets? It seems like a silly word game, but this is about a crucial difference: asset management or managing assets. The simple explanation is as follows (ISO, 2017). Managing assets (what you do for the assets) can be done without paying attention to the organisational strategy and context. This usually focuses on as maintenance management, maintenance planning, keeping track of information in IT systems, optimization of work orders and spare part management. Asset management has a broader focus and starts with the goals of the organization and determines which assets are needed for to achieve these goals, also has a long-term focus, looks at the entire life cycle of the assets and has a holistic view of financing (so no distinction between OPEX and CAPEX) ). Managing assets, important as it is, is only a part of asset management.
Simply put, within asset management is it all about finding answers to the seemingly simple questions:
- What are the assets that we have?
- What do we want to achieve with these assets - now and in the future?
- What can our system / network of assets deliver - now and in the future?
- What should our system / network of assets be able to deliver - now and in the future?
- What is the condition of our assets - now and in the future?
- How, where, when can we intervene - in the short and long term?
- Which are we dealing with - in the short and long term?
- How do we organise ourselves and how do we work with our suppliers?
We, the research group in Asset Management, are working on a broad range of interesting projects. All of these projects have a multidisciplinary approach.
Topics you can work on
- Use cases and business cases for management of water, energy and industrial assets
- Challenges ranging from optimising planning for maintenance and inspection, applying condition-based monitoring and predictive maintenance to implementing organisational changes and outsourcing of processes and activities.
- Use of new technologies in asset management, like smart sensors, internet of things, robotics, big data en predictive, prescriptive analytics
- Role of asset management and maintenance in the circular economy
- Adaptive and flexible infrastructure to deal with the consequences of climate change
You will contribute to:
- Effective and efficient asset management in public and private organisations
- Updating and improving of services and processes of public and private organisations
- Co-creation and multidisciplinary collaboration within organisations
You will learn and acquire skills on:
- Long-term replacement plans for infrastructure assets
- Data-driven asset management
- Decision-making for water management and safety
- Develop skills like change making and research capacity in a practically-orientated research project

Entry requirements: you are in study year 3 or 4 and you have achieved your propedeuse.

- Period: semester 1: 26 August 2019 until 24 January 2020 | semester 2: 27 January 2020 until 26 June 2020
- Level: HBO bachelor level II, and partially level III
- Credits: 30 ECTS
- Intensity: full-time
- Location: HZ Middelburg and / or at location in the work field, depending on the project
- Language: English - depending on the project Dutch is possible as well
- Examination type: individual, oral Final Assessment about the participant's digital portfolio (Professional Products and Progress & Reflection)
